Pack Dog Hike - Sunday June 5, 2011 - Colorado Trail, Kenosha Pass Trailhead, CO
Although drafting is the Bernese Mountain Dog's traditional work our breed can also excel as a pack dog. Berners are already eligible to participate in the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog club's pack dog events and BMDCR member Ron Abbott has earned pack dog titles with his Berners.
Anyone interested in hiking with their Berner is welcome to join us at 10:00 a.m. at the Colorado Trail parking area on the west side of US Hwy 285 at Kenosha Pass. Ron will have an extra dog pack available if anyone is interested in trying it out on their dog with a token load. The trail runs three to four miles to Guernsey Creek where the dogs can take a dip - plan on around five to six and a half hours round-trip. Dogs can be off-lead, but must remain under control, especially near the trailhead. The trail is rated easy to moderate the entire way. It wends uphill through subalpine forest for about the first 3/4 miles, then opens to aspen and grass meadows on a very long down slope to the floor of South Park, affording spectacular views.
For more information contact Ron Abbott
